X-Wing®
Introduction:
FTF Group's X-Wing® Chilled Beam represents the very latest development in passive beam technology. X-Wing® employs connective and radiant cooling principles and is designed to deliver high cooling duties (Up to 54 BTU/hr/ft2 when concealed behind S5046 perforated metal ceiling) with no noise and minimal air movement.
X-Wing® can be installed above a perforated metal ceiling system or integrated into a Multi-Service Chilled Beam. It is ideal for use in high-spec offices where there is a requirement to provide the best possible occupancy comfort levels with minimal environmental impact. X-Wing® achieves this whilst integrating into aesthetically stunning Ceiling Systems or Chilled Beam casings.
Benefits:
- Life expectancy in excess of 30 years
- No moving parts equates to reduce maintenance cost
- Capital costs now comparable with more traditional air systems
- Unobtrusive solution - concealed units
- Lower running costs than traditional air conditioning systems
- Environmentally friendly solution
- High cooling effects (up to 54 BTU/hr/ft2)
- Small underplate perforations make X-Wing® beams invisible inside the MSCB casing
- Technology proven over 25 years
- Smooth painted surfaces are simple to clean
- 50% more cooling with no draft risk
- Lightweight product, easy to install, uses less material resource
- Radiant cooling effect delivers higher comfort levels
- MSCB Optional Features
- Integrated Lighting
- Condensation sensors

Width: 4ft max (Assembled Unit).
Connection Possibilities:
Water: Horizontal, same end or opposite
Performance
Cooling up to: 382 BTU/hr/ft.
Maintenance
The unit has no moving parts, and therefore maintenance requirement is limited to periodic cleaning of the cooling surfaces. All sides of the X-Wing® can be accessed from below via the removable perforated faceplate.
Installation
Beams are designed to be supported by 2 to 5 sets of threaded rod hangers, dependent on product length. The X-Wing® Chilled Beam is of a "Passive" type offering cooling through a natural buoyancy process as well as via radiant exchange. Beam can be positioned above a perforated metal ceiling or integrated into a Multi-Service Chilled Beam.
Cooling Principles
As cold water passes through the Chilled Beam, the warm room air is cooled against the beams surfaces. This cooled air, which is heavier due to its higher density, then streams through the perforated underplate in the beam and percolates through the small ceiling perforations into the room space below. In this way air is circulated within the room, with warm air from the room being continually replaces by cool air. The efficiency of the convection proves, couples with the ability of the product to exchange energy by way of long-wave radiation, means that X-Wing® retains a high cooling effect even when the air temperature in the room is relatively low (e.g. at night or when the building is unoccupied). In this way large amounts of cold energy can be stored in the building structure during low load periods, and used to offset heat gains when the need arises.
Cooling performance for the Chilled Beam elements is based on their positioning above the MSCB's metal slot-perforated underplate (normally 50% open area with 3/16" holes). Smaller perforation hole sizes and free areas can be used, although there will be a consequent reduction in product cooling capacity.
